The new elementary school will open this fall.
The new addition to Smyrna and Cobb's schools community, Smyrna Elementary School, will open its doors in August, welcoming an estimated 700 students from Brown, Argyle and Belmont Hills elementary schools. Parents and teachers have recently elected the new elementary's PTA board members for the upcoming school year. Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon will be recognizing educators, volunteers and students from 13 Smyrna area schools Monday evening.
A group of teachers, students and volunteers from 13 Smyrna area schools will be honored tonight with Mayor's Education Awards. City of Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon and council members will hold an Education Awards Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. today at the City Hall, followed by the regular City Council meeting at 7:30 p.m. Outstanding students, staff members and volunteers from 12 Smyrna area schools in the Cobb County School District in addition to a public charter school, the International Academy of Smyrna, will be recognized for their academic achievement, dedication and volunteer service. After being a part of the Smyrna community for more than 50 years, the school is closing its doors.
Smyrna community members will be celebrating and remembering the history of Brown Elementary School this weekend with an event open to the public. Local residents, students, teachers and alumni are invited to attend the reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, at the school located at 3265 Brown Road. Brown, a Title I Distinguished School, was established in Smyrna in 1955. The 2012-13 school year is the building's last as Brown Elementary before its students join their peers from Belmont Hills and Argyle elementary schools at the new Smyrna Elementary School. The 2012-2013 school year will be the 57-year-old school's last.
Brown Elementary School has seen its 57th and final first day of school. The 2012-2013 school year will be the building's last as Brown Elementary School. Next year students from Brown will join some of the students from Belmont Hills and Argyle elementary schools at the new Smyrna elementary school that has yet to be named. Brown will then become the new home to H.A.V.E.N. Fitzhugh Lee Academy, which is currently located in south Smyrna. Teachers and Principal Brett Ward gathered in front of the school and in the lobby to greet students on their first day. One parent said that while she was excited about the new school she would miss the small, family atmosphere at Brown.

Friday morning at Brown Elementary School a group of third graders and their principal are gathered around an artist’s rendering of the new Smyrna elementary school and it’s hard to say who’s more excited, the kids or Principal Brett Ward. There’s an explosion of ‘whoas’ and ‘wows’ from Annabelle Terry, Hector Escobedo and Marquavius Chester Brown when their principal tells them the new school will have an elevator. Escobedo asks if he can bring his skateboard. Tonight's meeting completes the south Cobb redistricting process that began almost a year ago.
Cobb County School Board members will decide at their meeting Thursday night whether to close Brown Elementary School and Sky View Elementary School as part of the school district’s proposed redistricting plan. If the redistricting plan is approved, Smyrna’s Brown Elementary School would close in August 2013 and Fitzhugh Lee H.A.V.E.N Academy would relocate to Brown’s campus at 3265 Brown Road in January 2014. In Mableton, Sky View Elementary School would close at the end of the 2011-2012 school year and Austell Primary and Austell Intermediate would be converted into traditional kindergarten through fifth grade elementary schools in August 2012. The Cobb Board of Education will hear from parents, students and community members affected by the proposed closures of Brown and Sky View elementary schools.
The Cobb County School Board will hold its first public school closure hearing Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to receive feedback from parents and community members about the proposed closures of Brown and Sky View elementary schools. The hearing will be held at the district's Central Office at 514 Glover St. in Marietta. Students at Brown, which is proposed to close in the fall of 2013, will attend the new Smyrna elementary school. Smyrna’s Fitzhugh Lee H.A.V.E.N. Academy will be moved to the Brown Elementary location. School district officials are still seeking input from parents concerning the fourth south Cobb elementary school redistricting map that it released in late December. An online survey is being offered by the Cobb County School District to help develop plans that address the needs of students. "Feedback from staff, parents and community members is important to the school strategic planning process," a news release says. "Your participation in (the) School Improvement Survey will provide feedback about the quality of educational services and programs in our schools." Responses are anonymous, and the results will be given to the principals later this year to help identify priorities. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. To take the survey, click here.
