Campbell may have won just one football game last season, but the Spartans are stepping up in class. That’s because the Georgia High School Association’s State Executive Committee approved on Tuesday the reclassifications that were proposed in November, which includes the creation of Class AAAAAA (yes, six!) for the biggest high schools in Georgia. The vote was 47-1, with one pass. Reclassification was based on this year’s enrollment of ninth- to 11th-graders for each of its member schools. The Spartans, now in Class AAAAA, are among the 63 schools out of the 65 originally proposed that will make up Class AAAAAA for 2012-14. With the addition of Marietta High School, here's how the new Region 4-AAAAAA will look: Subregion A Subregion B …

Campbell, Lovett and Whitefield Academy boys basketball teams are all involved in holiday tournaments Wednesday.
The Campbell Holiday Classic tips off today and both teams from the host school are looking for repeat performances that led to tournament titles a year ago. But it won’t be easy. The Campbell boys enter Wednesday’s 8:30 p.m. game versus Carver-Atlanta having dropped three straight contests. Overall, the Spartans are 4-4 on the season and struggling to find an identity with leading returning player Matt Cotton out for the season with a knee injury. In addition to Carver, Southwest Atlanta Christian and Forest Park are on the Spartans’ side of the bracket. The four teams in the other bracket include Pope, Greenforest Christian, Hiram and Washington. There are six girls teams participating as there will be a two-game round robin before the …

It’s time to look at what’s up on this Sportopia Monday Smyrna-Vinings Style. Congratulations to east Cobb’s Walton Raiders for advancing to this Saturday’s GHSA Class AAAAA state championship game. Walton defeated rival Lassiter 30-24 on Friday night in the semifinals and will face Grayson in the title game. Walton is the first Cobb school to play for state title since Harrison appeared in the title game in 2000. It’s been 38 years since an east Cobb school (Wheeler) played for the state championship and the Raiders are seeking to become only the second county team to win a state championship (Marietta, 1967). Here’s the schedule and additional info for this coming weekend’s state title games at the Georgia Dome. Friday, December 9 4:30 p…

A quick peek at what's going on at Smyrna's high school.
Campbell High School is fortunate to have so many different cultures, religions, and ethnicities that coexist peacefully amongst the staff and students. To celebrate Campbell’s diversity, the school recently staged its popular International Festival. The event featured a Parade of Nations and a presentation by senior poet and rapper Isaiah Hunter that can be found here. Check out The Spartan Chronicles for a full report on the International Festival. _______ Randy McClure, a CHS science department head and head girls’ basketball coach, was recently presented with a plaque after being selected as the Coca-Cola 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year. Lovett last week again showed itself a resourceful road team, beating Callaway 19-7 at the Cavaliers' home stadium. The Lions, 3-0 on the season, won its second away game, also beating Thomasville to open the 2011 campaign. Lovett will need all of that road toughness and more in a couple of weeks when the team heads up the interstate to Buford to play the state's most dominant team in Class AA. In the game at 5-AA's Callaway, the Lions matched a balanced offensive attack with a sturdy defense, outgaining the Cavs 270-144 in total yards. Behind Arthur Winbourne's 62 yards, Grant Haley's 57 and Luke Hart's 42, the Lions rolled up 181 on the ground. Hart was 9 for 16 for 89 yards passing. Receiver Mason Marsteller caught three passes for 24 …
