Smyrna-Vinings residents have the opportunity to get involved and learn about how to reduce underage drinking in their communities at the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce general meeting on Tuesday, May 7. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cobb Sheriff's Work Release Center located at 1825 County Services Parkway, Marietta. Discussion will include the taskforce's strategies and plans in tackling underage and youth binge drinking throughout Cobb County. The Smyrna Police Department arrested two employees of Discount Tobacco and Red Lobster Tuesday after they sold alcohol to a minor.
Two businesses in Smyrna, Discount Tobacco and Red Lobster, failed a recent alcohol compliance check by the Smyrna Police Department. Smyrna police conducted an alcohol compliance check Tuesday at 17 Smyrna businesses. The Department’s Street Crimes Unit sent an underage informant to the 17 locations as part of an effort to reduce underage drinking, in partnership with the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce. "Employees from 15 Smyrna businesses did exactly as they should—they checked IDs and refused to sell to minors," said Smyrna police spokesperson Michael Smith. Employees from two businesses, Arman Khaleghi, 25, of Kennesaw, and 29-year-old Anika McCoy of Marietta, were arrested after they checked the informant's ID and sold alcohol to the minor, …

Middle and high school aged youth members of the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce Youth Council will be baking and delivering baked goods and thank you notes to 22 law enforcement agency locations around Cobb County this Saturday as part of Public Safety Appreciation Week. The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce teams up with civic organizations and the government to help reduce underage drinking.
The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce is conducting a community survey to help identify effective strategies to reduce underage and youth binge drinking. More than 2,000 participants from Acworth, Austell, Kennesaw, Marietta, Powder Springs, Smyrna and unincorporated Cobb County are needed by Sept. 30. A similar survey was previously conducted in 2009 as a requirement of the Sober Truth On Preventing Underage Drinking (STOP) Grant. As high school graduation ceremonies near and friends gather to celebrate, parents are encouraged to know their responsibility to provide a safe environment for their graduate. Parents tempted to permit the use of alcohol by their graduate and friends can be subject to criminal and/or civil action for illegally providing alcohol to minors. According to Georgia law, parents cannot give alcohol to their teen’s friends who are under age 21, under any circumstances. However, Georgia law states parents can allow their own child to consume alcohol under their direct supervision and in their own home. The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce is asking young filmmakers to help spread its message about the dangers of underage drinking through the Youth Voice and Vision Video Public Service Announcement Contest. The video contest is part of the taskforce’s participation in National Alcohol Awareness Month, which is held every year in April. We don’t really know how things went so wrong for the parents from Menlo Park, CA, who face 44 counts of suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Bill Burnett, a Stanford University professor, was arrested the night after Thanksgiving over a basement party thrown by his son, 17, to celebrate a high school football win, reported Leanne Italie. The story didn’t report how the alcohol showed up, or if this was the first time police responded to a call at this location, or what precipitated the call that led police to find teenagers drinking alcohol at this home. When will you people take the time to check out the Chevron on the corner of Jim Ownes and Cobb Parkway. Time and time again I have seen sales to those under 21 years of age and no one seems to want to step in and stop it. More goes on there then I will be posting here but all I ask the task force to do is check the place out and they will find out what I have been talking about.   more ›
