Here are the latest updates on road work being done around Smyrna-Vinings and Cobb County, according to District 2 Commissioner Bob Ott, District 4 Commissioner Lisa Cupid and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). Expect delays as Georgia DOT continues working on a $56 million resurfacing project on I-285. Crews will resurface 10 miles of I-285 between Paces Ferry Road in Cobb County and Ashford Dunwoody Road in DeKalb County. Most work will take place nights and weekends. The project is scheduled to complete in August.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners recently approved several items funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. These actions included: County staff and Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood also provided commissioners with an update on collections and expenditures from the current SPLOST. This four-year 1 percent sales tax will be collected until December 2015 and must be spent on voter approved projects. Fernando Wise was removed after refusing to give his name during a Cobb Board of Commissioners public hearing.
A Cobb County man was released after being escorted from the Cobb Board of Commissioner's meeting Tuesday night in handcuffs when he refused to give his name during a public hearing. "There is nothing in the first amendment requiring me to give my name to speak," Fernando Wise said. Chairman Tim Lee, who asked Cobb County police officers to remove Wise from the meeting room, said there are processes and procedures in place that must be followed. "I apologize it has to come to this, but we must be consistent," he said. Members of the standing room only crowd yelled, "Let him go!" as Wise was escorted from the room. The county is in strong financial standing, Chairman Tim Lee said.
In a time when Cobb County Commission Chairman Tim Lee said governments are close to filing for bankruptcy, Cobb County is thriving. The county, which recieved on unqualified or clean opinion on its Comprehensive Annual Plan audit, has the lowest millage rate in the metro Atlanta area, added 3 percent to the general fund reserve and 5 percent to its fire district fund reserve. And, in most areas, the county's revenues for fiscal year 2012 not only exceeded expenditures but also exceeded what county officials originally had budgeted. For example, in the General Fund, revenues came in at $327.5 million, up from the $325.8 million originally budgeted. And, expenditures came in at $313.3 million, $17.3 million less than what county officials …

Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee will deliver the 2013 state of the county address before the Cobb Chamber of Commerce next week. The organization's First Monday breakfast starts Jan. 14 at 7:30 a.m. at the Cobb Galleria Centre, 2 Galleria Parkway. The online registration and refund deadline is today at 12 p.m. Tickets are $25 a person for Cobb Chamber members online and $40 at the door; general admission tickets are $60 a person. Lee, a Republican from East Cobb, won a full-term as chairman last August after filling the final two years of former chairman Sam Olens' term. Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott will be sworn in for a second term today. Ott, a Republican who was re-elected without opposition this year, will take the oath of office Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the office of Cobb Superior Court Judge Adele Grubbs, 70 Haynes St., Marietta. His District 2 covers the Smyrna-Vinings area and most of East Cobb below Roswell Road. A convenience store has lost its beer, wine and Sunday sales licenses after an employee was caught selling alcohol to a minor. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted on Tuesday to follow the recommendation from the License Review Board and revoke the licenses for the Roswell Road Food Mart located at 3782 Roswell Road in Marietta following an almost two-and-a-half hour hearing, during which the cashier, Kazi Hossain, admitted to overriding the cash register's safety measures to make the sale without entering a birth date. The 3 percent across-the-board pay increase is due to more revenues and fewer expenses than anticipated.
Despite the opposition of several residents, the Cobb Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 on Tuesday night to give the county's more than 4,000 employees a 3 percent across-the-board pay increase effective Dec. 9. These employees, Chairman Tim Lee said, are on the front line providing services to the county's residents. "We don't make widgets," Lee said. "We don't buy things. We don't sell things. We provide services." It's been five years since county employees have seen pay increases, and last year they were required to take five furlough days. After spending about an hour and a half listening to testimony and arguments on Tuesday morning, the Cobb Board of Commissioners voted to uphold the decisions by the county's License Review Board in two matters. The board voted unanimously to maintain a 30-day suspension levied on the Texaco Food Mart on Cobb Parkway after employee Sujit Kumar PoonMagar sold alcohol to a minor during a compliance check on Sept. 13. Detective Rusty Creamer of the Cobb County Police Department said the minor who purchased the six-pack of beer told PoonMagar she was born on Aug. 20, 1994, her actual birthdate.
