'Side Effects' Defines Film Noir

There's a thriller on the loose and a chilling indictment of the nation's pharmaceutical industry.

Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh is behind this thriller that shows you what can happen when prescription medications like antidepressants go haywire in "Side Effects." Rooney Mara plays a woman with a lot going on in her life. Her husband, Channing Tatum, is getting out of prison. She's in a financial crisis and in deep depression. Her psychiatrist, Jude Law, prescribes an experimental new drug at the request of another medical colleague played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. While on the drug, Mara's character sleepwalks her way into a murder, and from there we go on a thriller roller-coaster ride. There is a surprise ending to this film so I will not give away too much information. I will say that the film is not quite what it seems …

It's the Most Wonderful/Depressing Time of the Year?

Extending love during Christmas can be the greatest gift for those that desperately need it.

Like the famous song from Andy Williams says about the holiday season, “It's the most wonderful time of the year.” No doubt, Christmas time is special — what many consider to truly be the most wonderful time of each year. It is easy to see why: presents; time with family; elaborate Christmas light displays; great food. It is also the lack of these things, however, that people all over find it to be the most depressing time of the year.  Christmas has a way of taking the good in our lives and amplifying it. For those in stable relationships, even new ones, the bond with the other person can feel much stronger. Families, too, can feel more connected and together. Firemen are cool so apply to be one

Cobb County will be offering tests for the open positions Jan. 10-13.

Was firefighter one of your dream jobs when you were a child? Here’s your chance to make your dream come true. Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services will be offering written exams for entry-level firefighters Jan. 10-13, according to a county news release. The position has a starting annual salary of $38,355 and includes health and dental coverage, a retirement plan, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, deferred compensation, and holiday and sick leave. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 23. To apply, you must be 18 or older by the test dates and have a valid driver’s license. Photo IDs will be checked the day of the test.
