Meet the Candidates: Drew Ellenburg

Drew Ellenburg is pursuing the Republican nomination for the Distirct 6 State Senate seat currently held by Doug Stoner.

Competition is steep for this year’s District 6 State Senate election. The district was redrawn based on the 2010 U.S. Census and now includes more Republican territory: Sandy Springs and Buckhead, in addition to Smyrna-Vinings. Incumbent State Sen. Doug Stoner (D-Smyrna) has three Republicans vying to be his competitor in the November election. Smyrna-Vinings Patch sat down with one of the candidates to hear his thoughts on the issues facing District 6. Drew Ellenburg is a fifth generation Atlantan. In regards to the Regional Transportation Referendum, I think that if more people had the option to ride mass transit then it would certainly be something that is utilized. If we have more mobility options in place for people to use then they will begin to use them but people have to have options.   more ›

3 Reasons to Oppose TSPLOST

To all the claims of easing traffic congestion and creating jobs is one columnist's emphatic reply: Baloney.

So much has been said recently about the upcoming TSPLOST referendum that would raise sales taxes for 10 metro Atlanta counties under the guise of providing a "regional solution" to Atlanta's traffic congestion. Obviously, everything we hear from the proponents of the TSPLOST is positive both in terms of its projects and its effects.   Not only are we supposed to believe that all of the metro area's economic problems are because of our "traffic congestion." Not only will this proposed $18 BILLION dollar solution solve all of our traffic problems, it will provide "thousands" of jobs, improve our performance in attracting companies to relocate to the area and otherwise foster a new spirit of cooperation around the region. Brian, what have you been reading. Almost all of Cobb's 10 year TSPLOST goes to a rail line, most of which would be built in Fulton and Atlanta, or buses, maybe, that would connect with Marta and BE Marta. We will not know until the Alternative Analysis is done a year from now. And, since this must be federally approved, only certain projects are being looked at, like trains and buses.
