Smyrna's Unemployment Rate Again Rises to 8.4%

Revised January figures show the actual January jobless rate was 8.1 percent.

Smyrna's unemployment rate rose to 8.4 percent in February, with 2,534 people counted as jobless in the Cobb County city. Just a few weeks ago the Georgia Department of Labor reported the city's January jobless rate at 8.4 percent, but after revisions the agency revealed the actual rate was 8.1 percent. An additional 110 workers were counted as unemployed last month. Smyrna retains the distinction of having the lowest unemployment rate of the three Cobb cities for which statistics are compiled, with Marietta at 8.7 percent and Kennesaw at 9 percent. Overall Cobb County's February unemployment rate was even better than those three cities, with 7.4 percent of the labor force considered jobless. That was a drop of four-tenths of a percent …

Due to the decrease in service-sector jobs, the public adult education center being paid for with part of the SPLOST should hopefully help retraining people that are trained for service sector jobs to skills that are valuable for businesses which should attract businesses and jobs to Cobb and Smyrna. Website Helps Returning Veterans Find Jobs

New initiatives launched by Governor's Office of Workforce Development includes Operation: Workforce website for companies to list job opportunities for veterans.

Gov. Nathan Deal and the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development on Thursday launched Operation: Workforce to help returning veterans find jobs. Job listings from companies across Georgia looking to fill positions with veterans are posted on the website. The website also includes information on resources and services available to veterans. GOWD also kicked off the Hire a Georgia Veteran campaign. This campaign consists of a “Pledge to Support Georgia’s Veterans” for employers to sign. Employers who sign the pledge commit to give enhanced hiring opportunities to veterans. “Serving Georgia’s veterans is a top priority for the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development,” said Executive Director Tricia Pridemore in a press release …
