Cobb County Chairman Tim Lee spoke Tuesday at the Vinings Business Association.
Tuesday Cobb County Commission Chairman Tim Lee said that the 44 new jobs included in the proposed fiscal year 2013 budget aren’t really all that new. The Chairman was addressing the Vinings Business Association when a member asked if the 44 additional positions in the 2013 budget were really “new” or if they would replace positions that had been eliminated in the past. Lee’s answer was yes and no and he used the magistrate court as an example. “Two years ago the legislature in their wisdom decided to write a new law that shifted the workload from state court to magistrate,” he said. “I’m not quite sure why, but when they did that they didn’t change the fee structure (…) Yes, I’m adding positions to the magistrate court, but what they …

The budget is balanced without a millage rate increase or furlough days. City staff will also receive a 2 percent pay raise for the first time in four years.
Smyrna City Council passed a $74,298,669 budget for fiscal year 2013 at its meeting Monday. The vote was 5-1 with Ward 6 Council Representative Wade Lnenicka dissenting. Ward 3 Council Representative Teri Anulewicz was absent. The budget breaks down to $38,536,854 for the general fund, $21,904,754 for the water and sewer fund and $13,857,030 for the special revenue fund. The budget was balanced without furlough days for city staff or a millage rate increase. Smyrna’s millage rate of 8.99 mills has not increased since 2007. Council will vote to adopt the FY 2013 budget at its meeting June 18.
At its meeting Monday Smyrna City Council voted to pass a water and sewer increase, but tabled the adoption of the Fiscal Year 2013 budget. Council voted 7-0 to enact an eight percent increase to the city’s tiered water rates and a four percent increase to its sewer rates. Here’s what the increase looks like: FY 2012 FY 2013 Tier 1 $3 $3.23 Tier 2 $3.94 $4.30 Tier 3 $4.93 $5.36 Tier 4 $5.77 $6.28 Sewer Rate $6.55 $6.81 The city buys its water from the Cobb-Marietta Water Authority, a wholesale supplier. The water authority informed the city that it would be implementing an annual eight percent rate increase effective Jan. 2012 through 2018. As of Jan. 1, 2012, the city of Smyrna pays the water authority $2.34 per 1,000 gallons of water. …

The Cobb Board of Education is holding its annual budget public forum at 7 tonight at the Central Office, 514 Glover St., Marietta. It's an opportunity to make comments and ask questions about the $841.9 million budget for the year beginning July 1. The preliminary budget the school board approved on a 6-1 vote April 26 uses five furlough days, a 175-day school year, a half-year delay in step pay raises, $21.2 million from the reserve fund and a reduction of 350 teaching jobs, among other cuts, to close a projected $62.5 million deficit. Now that I think about it I do have an opinion about the above article. What comes to mind if offshoring jobs. They're now bringing them back onshore because it's turning out to be a failed experiment. Could outsourcing government services suffer the same fate.   more ›
