The Cobb commissioner and other county officials recently participated in firefighter exercises.
A group of Cobb County government officials got to experience what it's like to be a firefighter. Cobb District 2 Commissioner Bob Ott, Cobb Public Safety Director Jack Forsythe and 911 Director Ann Flynn took part in firefighter training exercises last week at the Public Safety Training Center in Marietta. The experience included a ladder climb as well as interior smoke and fire simulations. More than 650 sworn firefighters and 32 civilian employees make up the team at Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services. The department covers 305 square miles of the unincorporated areas of Cobb as well as three incorporated cities including Kennesaw, Acworth and Powder Springs. The team responded to more than 48,000 calls last year.

Five Gwinnett County firefighters were taken hostage Wednesday by a man who called 911, claiming he was having a medical emergency. Tell us if you believe arming fire personnel would have prevented this incident.
The city of Suwanee was in the nation's eye Wednesday after five Gwinnett County firefighters were taken hostage by a 55-year-old man who had called 911 claiming he was suffering from a medical emergency. Gwinnett officials on Thursday said Lauren Holman Brown likely planned the incident, as he told his hostages that he chose firefighters "because he knew (police) would come armed.” The incident ended when Brown was killed after exchanging gunfire with Gwinnett SWAT officers. An officer was wounded in the left forearm by a shot from Brown when police entered the house, according to a police statement; the injured officer returned fire, killing Brown. After 30 weeks of training, Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services today will welcome 31 new firefighters. The agency will hold a swearing in ceremony for class No. 42 at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Wellness Center, 1150 Powder Springs St. NW, Ste. 100, Marietta. The ceremony will be the culmination of weeks of training in firefighting, emergency medical services, policy and procedures, and daily physical fitness.

Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services will be offering written exams for entry-level firefighters Jan. 10-13, according to a county news release. The position has a starting annual salary of $38,355 and includes health and dental coverage, a retirement plan, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, deferred compensation, and holiday and sick leave. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 23. To apply, you must be 18 or older by the test dates and have a valid driver’s license. Photo IDs will be checked the day of the test.
