Ashley Playford dressed up as a pirate carrying a mermaid this Halloween. Actually, she dressed up as the mermaid. Well...Her creativity has earned her the title of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America and a $5,000 grand prize. It was Playford's use of an optical illusion that won us over. Take a look at the photo she entered on Peekskill-Cortlandt Patch! Almost 4,000 Patch users entered the contest from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, with costumes ranging from the Eiffel Tower and Honey Boo Boo to a flower pot and a clever interpretation of "binders full of women." You know what they say—no (goblin) guts, no glory. Congratulations to "Box of Popcorn or 'KendallCorn'" uploaded by Paige Funk from Smyrna, the Georgia winner of Patch’s Best Halloween Costume in America Contest. A total of 349 photos from across Georgia entered the contest. Parents posted hundreds of costume photos of themselves and their families from this Halloween or from years past. We had lots of ghouls, ghosts, and Honey Boo Boos to choose from, but this Box of Popcorn won us over. As the winner of the $250 prize for the best costume in Georgia, Box of Popcorn by Paige Funk is now in the running to be the $5,000 grand prize winner of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America contest. The winner will be announced on Monday, Nov. 12.

Not sure what to do with all that leftover candy from Halloween? How about giving it back for a great cause? Some local dentists are participating in a "Halloween Candy Buyback" program by Operation Gratitude, a non-profit that sends care packages to overseas troops. Many dentists pay $1 per pound of candy, up to five pounds, or give prizes away in exchange for the candy. Some area dentists around Smyrna-Vinings and South Cobb participating this year include: Pediatric Dentistry at Vinings 3200 Highlands Parkway, Suite 110 Smyrna, GA, 30082 Phone: (678) 305-1090 Email: pedoatvinings@bellsouth.net www.pediatricdentistryatvinings.com A+ Pediatric Dentistry of Atlanta 4300 Paces Ferry Rd. Halloween is only a couple days away and now is a good time to discuss safe practices with your children. Increased visibility is extremely important on Halloween night and there are several inexpensive ways to help make sure your children can be seen. Glow in the dark bands can be worn around the neck, wrists, or ankles and are a fun way to brighten up a child’s costume. If your children are young you will likely accompany them but even then with all of the excitement, they can be unpredictable. Encourage everyone in the …
