What's Happening for New Year's Eve?

No matter how many times we've seen them, those Christmas movies endlessly repeating around the holidays are a tradition for many. Patch has whittled down the stack of holiday favorites and listed our top five. But we want to know about your favorites, too. Salvation Army Donations Down

Salvation Army bell-ringers and red kettles are a fixture outside Cumberland Mall and other metro Atlanta stores during the holidays.

The Salvation Army says donations are down 34 percent this season. The organization has issued the following statement: The need has sharply increased with continued unemployment and underemployment. More people are turning to The Salvation Army for assistance with food, clothing, utilities and shelter. This shortfall in donations is critical for many in the Atlanta Community. Donations that are received during the holiday are not just for toys and Christmas cheer; they support the elderly, homeless and needy families with children in the 13 counties that The Salvation Army Metro Atlanta serves. “It will be very difficult to meet these needs if we don’t meet our goal, said Major Marshall Gesner, Metro Atlanta Area Commander, in the …

Free concert tonight: Handel's 'Messiah'

Wednesday night holiday happenings around Smyrna-Vinings.

The Choir of St. Benedict's with the Kazanetti Chamber Orchestra will present George Frideric Handel's "Messiah" tonight at St. Benedict's Episcopal Church located at 2160 Cooper Lake Road. The 7 p.m. performance will feature Areitha Lockhart, soprano; Mary Altman, alto; Rick Clements, tenor; and William Baker, bass. As you and your family prepare to travel over the holidays, check out the tips below and offer some of your own to make the trip a little smoother. Smyrna Holiday Closing Dates

Community center and library closed for the final week of 2011 except for Radio Disney event on Dec. 31.

From the City of Smyrna’s website: City of Smyrna administrative offices will be closed from Friday, December 23 at noon through Monday, December 26 in observance of Christmas. Public Safety remains operational. Sanitation/Recycling collection will observe the holiday schedule. The Community Center will be closed for the following additional dates: Tuesday, December 27 through January 1 (except for the Noon Year’s Eve with Radio Disney event on December 31). The Library will be closed from the afternoon of the 23rd through January 2nd. Sanitation/Recycling: Christmas - Observed Monday, Dec. 26
