The West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department in New York state will soon receive a fire truck donated Wednesday by Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services.

A former Cobb County fire truck will have a new home in New York later this month. Officials from Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services held Wednesday morning a ceremony that saw the department donating a surplus fire engine—a 1992 Pierce Arrow Red Pumper with 177,292 miles on it—to the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department, which is based in Howard Beach, N.Y. It will be a long time before residents in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and other coastal areas recover from Superstorm Sandy's catastrophic damage. Patch has gathered some local resources if you want to help in relief efforts. Volunteers in New Jersey are being coordinated through an emergency response hotline, 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397). In other national headlines, the bodies of two North Carolina boys were found dead in a submerged car after a three-week search.

Areas along the East Coast were under mandatory evacuations Monday as Hurricane Sandy barreled toward the shore. Reports of damage were pouring in, and a number of roads were impassable, including those that usually do not experience flooding. Residents were advised not to try driving over them because the water might be deeper than it looked.
