Raul Maldonado-Lopez was killed in the accident just five days before his 29th birthday.

Members of Iglesia Asamblea del Principe de Paz in Clarkston, Ga. are feeling the loss of their friend Raul Maldonado-Lopez, 28, of Norcross, after he was killed in a car accident on I-285 west of the Chattahoochee River in Cobb County last week. “When you first met him he inspired you,” said IAPP’s Co-Pastor Monica Romero. “Even though you didn’t know him. Our pianist in the church—he hasn’t even been here for a year, but he said, ‘In the time that I’ve known him I feel like I’ve known him forever.’” A native of Tapachula, Mexico, Maldonado-Lopez had been a member of Iglesia Asamblea del Principe de Paz since 2002. Romero said he was a youth director and played bass and guitar in the church’s band. “We’re getting calls from Virginia of …

Reminder: Parts of I-285 Closed Sunday Morning

Cobb police will close some of I-285’s eastbound lanes west of the Chattahoochee to complete an accident investigation.

Cobb Police and HERO will close the lanes several of I-285’s eastbound lanes west of the Chattahoochee River beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday as they complete their investigation into Thursday’s fatality accident. Public Information Officer Dana Smith said officers will take turns closing a few lanes at a time while they take measurements and recreate the accident. “They’re only going to close lanes temporarily then open them and then close another three or four and then open those,” he said. “Hopefully by then they’ll be totally off the Interstate. “It’s not like a normal week obviously, but it’s still going to impact traffic. We’re definitely going to use HERO to slow folks down and move over those lane-mergers and get folks out of there as …

Responding to an Accident: Cobb PD’s 90-Minute Rule

Plus find out what you can do to prepare for the impacts of major accidents.

When Cobb police respond to a major accident like Thursday’s I-285 fatality, Public Information Officer Dana Pierce said the department holds itself to a strict standard when reopening the scene to traffic. “We have an unwritten 90-minute rule within the police department,” he said. “It’s just our own standard that we try to work with DOT. If everybody did that in the Atlanta area we’d all be better for it. It’s our unwritten rule. 90 minutes.” All lanes of I-285 eastbound just west of the Chattahoochee River were at a standstill after the three-car fatality accident Thursday. “The first lane opened at 94 minutes (…) So we bled all that traffic off, opened that lane and closed it again. Then we finished it out and opened all lanes of …

Regardless I think the 90 minute rule is pretty awesome. Once again Cobb County setting the standard. Could you imagine if the accident happened on the Fulton County side or even in Dekalb? It would have taken several hours for them to do the same thing.   more ›
