Smyrna-Vinings and Cobb County are included in a freeze warning covering parts of north and west central Georgia. In effect from 2 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, it warns of temperatures in the mid to upper 20s to low 30s. In Smyrna and Vinings, the mercury is expected to dip to 28, according to the NWS forecast. The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory through Wednesday, and says isolated thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible.
Hold onto your hats, it's getting windy out there, so windy that the National Weather Service has put out a wind advisory until 7 p.m. Wednesday. Expect winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Small trees in saturated soils and drought-stressed trees may be toppled. If you are driving a high-profile vehicle such as a minivan or SUV, expect driving to become hazardous in these gusts. Winter storms are possible in Smyrna-Vinings and across north Georgia on Thursday and into Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a winter storm watch for the area. Meteorologists say widespread rain should switch over to the white stuff sometime Thursday afternoon or evening, but the heaviest snowfall would be in the north Georgia mountains. Meteorologists say the rain might not leave Cobb until Thursday night.
Cobb County could continue to see rain through most of Thursday, but today’s showers and the short-term forecast have led weather experts to issue a flood watch for north Georgia through the first part of Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch that will be in effect until Wednesday morning. Meteorologists say the widespread showers with periods of heavy rain are expected to occur during the watch. Rains have already made the area’s soil wet, which will help in producing runoff as the wet weather continues. The weather service says minor flooding in smaller creeks, streams and low-lying flood-prone areas are possible. Following a warm weekend in the 70s, Georgia is set for rain, cooler temps and maybe even a blast of cold air from the north. A rainy Monday and Tuesday accompany cooler weather and a cold front, as it moves from out west to the east by midweek, according to The Weather Channel. It's not yet clear how far south the cold air would reach as the jet stream dips. Forecasters give Smyrna-Vinings a 100 percent chance of rain on Monday, when the high is expected to reach 56, and 80 percent chance on Tuesday with a high of 52, according to the National Weather Service. Rainy weather on Monday will continue on Christmas Day, and some stormy conditions are a possibility for late Tuesday night. The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather alert Monday indicating that a large band of severe thunderstorms will be making its way through north and central Georgia, most likely from late Christmas evening into the overnight and early morning hours on Wednesday.
