The latest inspections by Cobb Public Health include visits to Ruby Tuesday, Russell Elementary School, Wing Zone and Griffin Middle School.
Each item on an inspection form has a point value ranging from 1 to 9 points, with violations deducting points from a best possible score of 100. A sample inspection form is attached. Higher points are taken for items with higher risk to cause illness, while repeat violations take even more points. Letter grades assigned are A for totals of 100 to 90 points, B for 89 to 80, C for 79 to 70, and U for less than 70.

The Smyrna school held its first International Day Celebration Thursday, educating students about diversity and culture.
Russell Elementary School in Smyrna honored diversity, heritage and culture during its first ever International Day Celebration Thursday. Students, parents and teachers walked in a parade in traditional clothing from different cultures around the world during school day, and participated in the "Taste of Russell" in the evening. The school and its PTA community organized the event to educate children about their heritage, and to help them develop tolerance and appreciation from a young age for diversity not just in Smyrna, but around the world.

Administrative appointments are recommended by an interview committee comprised of school staff and community members.
At a recent meeting the Cobb County School Board approved several administrative appointments including two that impact Smyrna elementary schools. Principal Nancy Dipetrillo will retire after 29 yearsas an educator, the last eight years at Russell Elementary School. Peter Manson, currently the assistant principal at Kemp Elementary School in Powder Springs, will take over as principal effective July 1. Manson said he’s excited about the opportunity to lead Russell Elementary School. Dipetrillo introduced him to students last week on the school’s video announcements. Russell Elementary's Space Team completed their annual space mission Friday. The space team is one of only three of its kind in the country.
“Space shuttle Intrepid rolls out of the runway to complete a successful mission T plus 26 hours, two minutes, four seconds,” said the public affairs officer. No, it’s not NASA, but it is close. Russell Elementary School’s Space Team has just successfully landed after its 14th mission to space. Across the hall from mission control, the cafeteria erupts in cheers and chants of “USA!” Students have been monitoring the status of the mission since it began a little more than a day before and are excited by the successful landing. Russell Elementary School’s Space Team is one of only three of it’s kind in the country, said Nancy Dipetrillo, the school’s principal. Russell Elementary School recently received a $500 grant from Jamba Juice and the National Garden Association; limited plots still available at the Smyrna Community Garden.
“An apple a day keeps the doctor way,” is what Mom always said, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture thinks you need more fruits and veggies to stay healthy. That’s why it’s made June National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month. Luckily for Smyrna-Vinings residents, fresh produce is widely available. A survey posted on the U.S.D.A. Healthy Meals Resource System website found that over the past 25 years children have started eating more pizza, candy and savory snack foods in addition to drinking more carbonated sodas and non-fruit juices. Overall children drink less milk and eat fewer vegetables than they did 25 years ago. Russell Elementary School in Smyrna has taken steps to combat this trend and their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. The …
