VIDEO: Russell Elementary Celebrates Diversity, International Day

The Smyrna school held its first International Day Celebration Thursday, educating students about diversity and culture.

Russell Elementary School in Smyrna honored diversity, heritage and culture during its first ever International Day Celebration Thursday. Students, parents and teachers walked in a parade in traditional clothing from different cultures around the world during school day, and participated in the "Taste of Russell" in the evening. The school and its PTA community organized the event to educate children about their heritage, and to help them develop tolerance and appreciation from a young age for diversity not just in Smyrna, but around the world.

Administrative appointments are recommended by an interview committee comprised of school staff and community members.

At a recent meeting the Cobb County School Board approved several administrative appointments including two that impact Smyrna elementary schools. Principal Nancy Dipetrillo will retire after 29 yearsas an educator, the last eight years at Russell Elementary School. Peter Manson, currently the assistant principal at Kemp Elementary School in Powder Springs, will take over as principal effective July 1. Manson said he’s excited about the opportunity to lead Russell Elementary School. Dipetrillo introduced him to students last week on the school’s video announcements. Manson told Smyrna-Vinings Patch he was very impressed with Russell’s Space Team and the school’s emphasis on science and math, something he said he’d like to continue as …

Russell Elementary School's Space Team Is Out of This World

Russell Elementary's Space Team completed their annual space mission Friday. The space team is one of only three of its kind in the country.

“Space shuttle Intrepid rolls out of the runway to complete a successful mission T plus 26 hours, two minutes, four seconds,” said the public affairs officer. No, it’s not NASA, but it is close. Russell Elementary School’s Space Team has just successfully landed after its 14th mission to space. Across the hall from mission control, the cafeteria erupts in cheers and chants of “USA!” Students have been monitoring the status of the mission since it began a little more than a day before and are excited by the successful landing. Russell Elementary School’s Space Team is one of only three of it’s kind in the country, said Nancy Dipetrillo, the school’s principal. The space mission is the culmination of the Space Team’s year of hard work and …

Are You Celebrating National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month?

Russell Elementary School recently received a $500 grant from Jamba Juice and the National Garden Association; limited plots still available at the Smyrna Community Garden.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor way,” is what Mom always said, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture thinks you need more fruits and veggies to stay healthy. That’s why it’s made June National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month. Luckily for Smyrna-Vinings residents, fresh produce is widely available. A survey posted on the U.S.D.A.
