A Cobb County grand jury has indicted a former sheriff's deputy from Douglasville on charges of rape, sexual assault against persons in custody, violation of oath by public officer, and other charges. In a warrant, Cobb authorities alleged that 51-year-old Alvin Blake Sutherland made physical contact with an unamed female inmate at the Cobb jail on Jan. 11. He was fired from his job and arrested Jan. 18. But Kim Isaza, the spokeswoman for Cobb District Attorney Vic Reynolds, said this afternoon that the indictment alleges that Sutherland had sexual encounters with not just one, but four female inmates. Nearly 29 years ago, authorities discovered the body of a 30-year-old Smyrna woman floating in Bear Creek in South Fulton County.
Nearly two years after the state's highest court overturned the conviction of a 65-year-old man accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and strangling a Smyrna woman, Curtis Tyner is scheduled this week to stand trial for murder. On April 15, 1984, authorities discovered the body of 30-year-old Martha Anne Mickel floating in Bear Creek in south Fulton County. She'd been sexually assaulted, strangled and thrown in the creek after the attack, according to investigators. Days after the murder, authorities arrested Tyner, who is charged with murder, felony murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault with intent to rape, robbery by force and sexual battery. A little more than two weeks after a Cobb County deputy was arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a female inmate, a second deputy has been accused of the same thing. An internal investigation initiated after the Jan. 18 arrest of Alvin Blake Sutherland uncovered more alleged misconduct involving another deputy, according to WSB-TV. A Cobb County deputy from Douglasville has been accused of sexually assaulting a female inmate, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A warrant alleges Deputy Alvin Blake Sutherland, 51, made physical contact with an unamed female inmate at the Cobb jail on Jan. 11. Sutherland is charged with aggravated sodomy, aggravated sexual battery, sexual assault by a member of law enforcement, and violation of oath of public office, according to the report. Arrest records indicate that Sutherland remains in the Douglas County jail. Bond is expected to be set at $100,000, according to the AJC.

The Campbell High School student involved in an alleged sexual encounter with a former teacher has reportedly turned herself into police. Patch has learned that the 17-year-old student is now in the custody of the Smyrna Police Department. Former Campbell High teacher Jonas Magdangal, 55 of Smyrna, was arrested Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting the student. Detectives also obtained a warrant for extortion for the student after they alleged that she received money and an “A” in the class in exchange for keeping the encounter secret.
