Government: Smyrna City Council meets Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. A look at the agenda shows that Council will vote on an eight percent water rate increase that would take effect July 1. Smyrna residents can sound off on this and other items in the FY 2013 budget during a second public hearing at the meeting. It’s not too late to register for Cobb County’s Regional Transportation Referendum Wireside Chat with Chairman Tim Lee and Kennesaw Mayor Mark Matthews. Doug Stoner spoke to the Smyrna Business Association Thursday and not everyone was sold on the Transportation Investment Act.
While speaking to the Smyrna Business Association Thursday, state Sen. Doug Stoner explained that metro Atlanta voters won’t be the only ones closely monitoring the poll results for the Transportation Investment Act on July 31. “There are some folks outside of this state who are hoping this fails,” he said. “As one gentleman I work with in Dallas told me he said, ‘Personally I hope y’all are successful. But from a professional standpoint as the chairman I hope you fail because we’re going to eat your lunch.’” On July 31 voters decide whether to approve a one-cent special-purpose local option sales tax that would be collected over 10 years and used to fund a list of about 150 transportation improvement projects throughout the 10-county …

Good morning, Smyrna-Vinings! Let’s take a look at the week ahead. April has five Mondays this year, which means no Smyrna City Council meeting tonight. The next meeting will be Monday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Even though there’s no meeting scheduled, Smyrna’s Ward 3 Council Representative isn’t taking the night off. Teri Anulewicz is holding a Fifth Monday Meeting for Ward 3 residents. The meeting gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at the Smyrna Public Library conference room. The deadline to preregister for the Y Not Run 5K is also this week.
Last Chance is Smyrna-Vinings Patch’s weekly feature that reminds you of approaching deadlines. And this week we’ve got two reminders for you. Thursday, April 12 at 3 p.m. is the last chance to pre-register for the Y Not Run 5K and Skirt Run benefitting the YWCA of North Georgia. The race begins Saturday at 8 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Marietta, 56 Whitlock Avenue. Runners have the option to participate in a traditional 5K or a “skirt run” where women, and especially men, are invited to don their craziest skirts for the race. The race fee is $25. Graduating high school seniors from Osborne and Campbell have till April 15 to apply for the SBA scholarship. Nominations for the Business of the Year award will be accepted through May 3.
Smyrna Business Association is looking for entrepreneurial-minded high school seniors and business owners for its SBA Scholarship and SBA Business of the Year awards. Osborne and Campbell High School seniors interested in pursuing a business-related degree in college can apply for the SBA Scholarship. Students must fill out the application, write a one-page essay explaining why they should earn the scholarship, attach a pdf copy of their high school transcripts and include a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Let’s take a look at tonight’s Smyrna City Council meeting agenda and the week ahead. Council votes tonight whether to grant RaceTrac Petroleum Inc. a commercial building permit that would allow the company to begin construction of its convenience store at 2550 Spring Road. This time last year the construction of the convenience store was a hot button issue in Smyrna as some members of the community opposed its construction.
