Residents discuss new Smyrna charter school

Community parents and citizens met on Monday evening to discuss plans for a new charter school in Smyrna.

About 30 community members and parents attended an informational meeting held by the Smyrna Academy of Excellence. Board members discussed plans for the charter school construction, while parents voiced questions and concerns about the school and its curriculum. According to the website, The Smyrna Academy of Excellence strives to be “a national model for what is possible in public education.” The kindergarten through 12th grade charter school employs several unique strategies to meet this aim including a year-round 200-day calendar, an embedded foreign language program and a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum.
