Mayor Calls Resident's Comments 'Confrontational'

Betty Williams is upset about the proposed reapportionment map.

A public hearing regarding the City of Smyrna's proposed new districts turned into what Mayor Max Bacon called confrontational on Monday night. Betty Williams, who lives on Terrapin Road in the Rose Garden neighborhood, addressed the council to tell them how concerned she is that all low-income housing and apartments in the area are being combined into Ward 2. "People move in and out," Williams said. "I don't know how you can count anything. That's not right. If you can't do any better, leave us how we are. You say you want to put us together but you're doing it the wrong way." The council voted on Monday night to table a final vote on the new map to allow for more time to discuss it with residents of the Rose Garden and Davenport Town …

By the way, for everyone that has something negative about the government, note that I sent an email to discuss one aspect of the redistricting with Ron Fennel and Wade Lnenicka they were both informative and clear, and very helpful. This seems to contradict peoples' opinions about the way the city treats feedback. Additionally, delaying the decision seems to also be respectful in my opinion.   more ›

Council Approves New Smyrna Districts

The reapportionment is needed to even out the districts' populations following the 2010 Census.

Some Smyrna residents may be voting in new districts in the next election if a new district map proposed by city officials is approved at the state and federal levels. The city council approved the new map after its first public hearing on Monday night. No resident spoke during the public hearing. Council members will have a second public hearing and vote on Dec. 17. The reapportionment is necessary due to growth in the last 10 years, particularly in Ward 7, where Councilman Ron Fennel said the population now exceeds 12,000, which is 5,000 more than the populations in the city's other six districts. Under the new map, he would lose approximately 40% of his district's population. "That means I'm going to lose well over 5,000 people," Fennel…

City Extends Food Truck Tuesdays to Late November

Smyrna city officials say Food Truck Tuesdays is not just a weekly event, but an "amenity" for the city's residents.

Smyrna City Council unanimously approved Monday to extend Food Truck Tuesdays to Nov. 20 and officially adjust to the new 5-8:30 p.m. seasonal hours. Since it first began in July, Smyrna Food Truck Tuesdays has been wildly successful both in Smyrna and beyond, attracting more than 1,000 people in attendance weekly at Taylor-Brawner Park. The event was initially set to end this month. "We had no idea how successful this was going to be," said Mayor Max Bacon at Monday night's meeting. "We are very proud how it turned out." "It's done a lot for the community—bringing people together, and raising awareness of the great parks and green space we have in Smyrna," said Ward 3 Council Representative Teri Anulewicz. Anulewicz said the event will …
