Public Works Director Scott Stokes offered a progress report of some of the city's improvement projects at Monday's Smyrna City Council meeting.
Construction and demolition continues at a steady pace in Smyrna according to Scott Stokes, Smyrna’s public works director. Stokes outlined the progress of several of the city’s improvement projects at Monday’s Smyrna City Council meeting. Smyrna residents were pleased to learn that Campbell Road Bridge was open for traffic Saturday afternoon, but there are still some components of the project that remain to be completed. The project is about 95 percent finished and there is still some landscaping that remains. Citizens were notified of the opening on the city's Facebook page. Wade Lnenicka, Ward 6 city council member, alerted citizens to the opening in an email. “I put that out in an email alert to Ward 6 residents and I had an …

Dusting off the Smyrna-Vinings Patch notebook on a Friday...or at least some of it.
OK, as I wrote last week, I’m going to do a better job of getting info out there. Sometimes things are more easily written than done. Oye! Anyway, I did hear back from a representative from Tri-Land Properties regarding the expected opening of The Crossings at Four Corners in Smyrna. And it now looks as if the 96,000 square-foot Kroger and accompanying fuel center will not be ready for the Christmas rush. At least that’s what I was told by someone from Tri-Land, whoindicated a targeted Jan. 19, 2012 grand opening date. As far as other tenants, leases have been signed with T-Mobile and a nail salon with more to follow. _______ I failed to fully address two other items last week, one being the construction of the Campbell Road Bridge. Really…

Just about everyone at Smyrna's City Hall spoke their mind at Monday's city council meeting.
Schools and public safety were prominent topics for council members, candidates and citizens alike at Monday night’s Smyrna city council meeting. The council approved a measure to pay the remaining balance owed on its purchase of Smyrna Commons apartments with surplus funds from the City’s unrestrictive reserve fund. After the city finalizes the sale of the property to the Cobb County School District, it will still owe a remaining balance of $3.35 million. This money will be paid from the City’s unrestrictive reserve fund, which currently comprises 35.35 percent of the City’s budget. Smyrna’s policy requires that the surplus be no fewer than 25 percent. After the balance is paid, the City surplus will be at 26.17 percent. The measure was …

The final numbers are in for Smyrna's purchase of an aging apartment complex and subsequent sale to the Cobb County School District.
Smyrna’s three-plus-year investment and involvement with the former Highlands Apartments should be coming to a close in the coming months. But just what was gained and what was lost? Roughly 40 months since the Smyrna Downtown Area Development Corporation (SDADC) purchased the 144-unit complex that sits on 9.62 acres near Campbell High School, the City should close on its sale of 7.45 acres to the Cobb County School District by the end of November. Highland Apartments, now known as Smyrna Commons, has been a hot-button topic among many concerned citizens in recent years. Smyrna mayoral candidate Alex Backry has longed complained that the City will be taking a significant financial loss on Smyrna Commons with the burden falling on the …

In addition to the approved millage rate, the Smyrna City Council also approved the North Smyrna Urban Redevelopment Plan on Monday night.
The Smyrna City Council voted to keep the 2011 millage rate unchanged in a Monday night meeting that featured both praise and opposition to the council’s recent decisions. Council members unanimously approved the adoption of the 2011 millage rate at 8.99 mills, which remains unchanged from the previous year’s rate. Several councilmen were eager to discuss the accomplishment that this millage rate represents. “In order to generate the same amount of revenue that we generated last year, we would actually have to have a millage rate of 9.66,’’ Councilman Michael McNabb said. “So keeping the rate at 8.99 actually represents a tax reduction in revenues of almost seven-percent.” Councilman Ron Newcomb explained that the millage rate has actually…

Good Samaritan survives leap off Camp Highland Road bridge early Saturday morning also in police briefs.
Several days after a man was shot and killed at the Smyrna Commons Apartments, Smyrna Police have not brought a suspect into cutosdy. The incident happened Tuesday between 8 and 8:30 p.m. The black male victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kennestone Hospital. The murder reportedly happened in a bedroom in the presence of a woman and a toddler. The male suspect escaped and there were reports that he might possibly be wounded and bleeding. “What we know is that it was a black male who fled the apartment complex,’’ said Sgt. Louis Defense of the Smyrna Police Department. “People say he probably sustained an injury, but until we apprehend a suspect, we cannot say categorically that he was wounded. We…
