The Smyrna Public Safety Foundation (SPSF) is gearing up for this year's Smyrna Shop With A Hero, an annual holiday event where local police officers, firefighters and military personnel from Dobbins Air Reserve Base take under priviledged children Christmas shopping. This will be the the 12th year for Smyrna Shop With A Hero, and the SPSF is inviting residents to participate by making tax deductible donations. 1: The Smyrna Police Department has one police dog. He’s a Belgian shepherd named Paco. 2: Number of 100-foot ladder trucks the Smyrna Fire Department owns. 4: Number of fire stations in Smyrna, but there’s a fifth opening in mid-September. 5: Number of Smyrna Fire Department's fire engines. Fire Chief Jason Lanyon said four are front-line and one is a reserve. 9: The Smyrna Police Department has nine traffic unit investigators. Four of them are motorcycle officer, four of them are investigators, one is the K-9 Unit and a lieutenant supervises the traffic unit. 11: Number of Smyrna Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Technicians 64: Number of beds in Smyrna’s jail. Cpl. Gene Crawford was injured in an on-duty motorcycle accident in May and now The Home Depot and the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation have teamed up to help.
Before an on-duty motorcycle accident left him wheelchair bound, Cpl. Gene Crawford spent 29 years serving and protecting the citizens of Smyrna, but now it’s his turn to receive a helping hand. Crawford’s home is receiving much needed renovations to make it wheelchair accessible through grants from The Home Depot Foundation. A team of The Home Depot’s associates completed the renovation Friday. Crawford is recovering from inuries from the May accident. The police officer sustained two broken ankles, a broken leg and a fractured pelvis after he was struck by a car when the driver failed to yield when turning onto South Cobb Drive. Save the date! The third annual Smyrna Heroes Gala takes place Saturday, September 8 at historic Brawner Hall. The Gala is a community wide effort to celebrate and honor Smyrna’s own heroes, those police officers, firefighters, and other public safety employees who protect and serve our community 24/7, 365 days a year. The Gala benefits the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation created to promote and support Smyrna’s Police and Fire Departments. Last year’s Gala netted over $33,000 for the SPSF, and this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better. The Smyrna Public Safety Foundation will kick off planning for the Third Annual Auction for Heroes Gala with a "sip and social" Wednesday at Atkins Park Tavern.
Mix and mingle with city officials and Smyrna’s public safety heroes at the Smyrna Heroes Gala Sip and Social Wednesday, March 7 at 6 p.m. at Atkins Park Tavern. The sip and social is the kickoff reception for the Third Annual Smyrna Auction for Heroes Gala. Last year’s sponsors will be recognized at the event. The Second Annual Auction for Heroes Gala netted $33,000 for the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation, a nonprofit with the primary goal of promoting and supporting the Smyrna Fire and Police Departments by raising funds for programs such as the "Shop with a Hero'' event. The annual "Shop With A Hero" program through the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation is set to take place on Friday, Dec. 9. Children from five local schools will be treated to breakfast and then paired-up with a local firemen, policemen and military personnel "heroes" at Wal-Mart to shop for Christmas. Later the kids will have lunch with the heroes before returning to school. Last year, about 50 children from Argyle, Belmont Hills, Brown, King Springs and Nickajack elementary schools were treated. For several years, members of the Smyrna Police and Fire Departments staged separate shopping events with area children before joining forces several years ago.
