First Day of Spring Is Today

March 20 marks the vernal equinox for 2013.

Considering it's March and we're still wearing sweaters and peacoats, winter seems like it's been around forever. Luckily, a new season is just around the corner, since the first day of spring is Wednesday, March 20. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, spring starts with the vernal equinox at 7:02 a.m. today. The almanac explains the word "equinox" is Latin for "equal night," which is exactly what spring is: The times for day and night are approximately 12 hours long. "The Sun crosses the celestial equator going northward; it rises exactly due east and sets exactly due west," continues the website. Freeze Warning in Effect Through Wednesday Morning

The temperature in the Smyrna-Vinings area is expected to drop to 28, but Saturday's high could reach 71.

Smyrna-Vinings and Cobb County are included in a freeze warning covering parts of north and west central Georgia. In effect from 2 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, it warns of temperatures in the mid to upper 20s to low 30s. In Smyrna and Vinings, the mercury is expected to dip to 28, according to the NWS forecast. But it won't be cold long. Heading into the weekend, the area should warm up a lot. NWS forecast Saturday's high to reach 71. Gusting Wind, Hail May Create Hazards in Smyrna-Vinings

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory through Wednesday, and says isolated thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible.

Hold onto your hats, it's getting windy out there, so windy that the National Weather Service has put out a wind advisory until 7 p.m. Wednesday. Expect winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Small trees in saturated soils and drought-stressed trees may be toppled. If you are driving a high-profile vehicle such as a minivan or SUV, expect driving to become hazardous in these gusts. If high winds weren't enough, isolated severe storms also are in our forecast with damaging wind and hail the main threats. But listen for those tornado sirens, as isolated tornadoes also are possible. Chance of Snow, Wintry Mix Through Weekend for Smyrna-Vinings

Portions of north and central Georgia may see flurries, sleet or snow this weekend and freezing temps through Sunday night.

Portions of north and central Georgia could see some snow flurries or a wintry mix as temps drop headed into the weekend. Overnight freezing temps are expected through Sunday night, and Friday night and Saturday hold slight chances of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a freeze warning that includes Cartersville and Bartow County. It's effective through 9 a.m. Friday. "A fast-moving but potent upper low sweeping across the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians [on] Saturday will bring a chance for at least light wintry precipitation to north Georgia," according to NWS' Hazardous Weather Outlook. Flood Watch In Effect Through Saturday

A slow-moving weather system will move over Smyrna-Vinings and the metro Atlanta area.

A flood watch is in effect from Atlanta southward through Saturday afternoon due to the potential for flooding in creeks, streams and flood-prone areas. A slow-moving weather system will move over the area through Saturday producing more than four inches of rain across central Georgia with up to an inch of rain possible. Showers moved in Thursday night and will continue today with a second round of scattered rain moving in tonight through Saturday morning. Temperatures in the Smyrna-Vinings area are expected to reach the low 50s this afternoon and drop into the mid 40s tonight. Heavy Rain for Smyrna and Vinings

Two more rounds of heavy rain are prompting concerns of flash flooding, extensive street flooding and isolated significant flooding across Smyrna-Vinings and Cobb County areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Most of Georgia, including Smyrna and Vinings, is in for a deluge as two rounds of heavy rain likely start today and continue through Tuesday, so get your rain boots and umbrellas ready. Two to 4 inches and 4 to 8 inches of rain have already fallen on north and central Georgia, respectively, since the beginning of February, prompting concerns of flash flooding, extensive street flooding and isolated significant flooding, according to the National Weather Service's Hydrologic Outlook. Wind Advisory: Gusts Up to 40 MPH Possible

Severe storms and heavy rainfall are possible as a strong storm system and cold front move across north and central Georgia.

Strong winds are expected to develop as a storm system and cold front move into the Smyrna-Vinings area Wednesday. In effect 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, a wind advisory for north and central Georgia, including Cobb County, warns of 15 to 25 mph winds with gusts up to 35 mph, which make driving difficult. "Showers and a few thunderstorms will accompany these winds, but it should be noted that very strong winds will be possible outside of any shower or thunderstorm activity as well," the advisory says. "Recent rains and the additional heavy rainfall anticipated from this system will allow for trees to be uprooted with greater ease." Snow, Accumulations Possible Thursday

The Smyrna-Vinings area could get its first glimpse this winter of the white stuff as rain across north Georgia may turn to snow with the arrival of a deep cold air mass.

Smyrna-Vinings and Cobb County could get the first snow of the winter and 2013 on Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service. A strong low pressure system and ample Gulf moisture will meet, resulting in widespread rain and an associated deep cold air mass that will begin to spread across north and central Georgia on Thursday afternoon and evening, meteorologists say in a special weather statement issued Tuesday. As a result, rain could change over to snow across parts of north Georgia, including Cobb and other counties from Dade to Toombs. Rain Moving In, Cold Air May Be on the Way

The Smyrna-Vinings area is set for a wet week of cooler temperatures as a cold front moves into Georgia. Freezing temperatures could arrive next week.

Following a warm weekend in the 70s, Georgia is set for rain, cooler temps and maybe even a blast of cold air from the north. A rainy Monday and Tuesday accompany cooler weather and a cold front, as it moves from out west to the east by midweek, according to The Weather Channel. It's not yet clear how far south the cold air would reach as the jet stream dips. Forecasters give Smyrna-Vinings a 100 percent chance of rain on Monday, when the high is expected to reach 56, and 80 percent chance on Tuesday with a high of 52, according to the National Weather Service.
