Brown Elementary proposed to close; two public forums scheduled for next week.
After speculating all summer, students, parents and teachers have a better idea of how South Cobb elementary schools will be redistricted for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years. Tuesday the Cobb County School District posted two maps to its website each outlining the redistricting alternatives for elementary schools in the south part of the county. Both alternatives propose closing Sky View Elementary School in Mableton. They also propose closing Brown Elementary School as a traditional elementary school. The H.A.V.E.N. Academy, a special education program that is currently located at Fitzhugh Lee School, would be relocated to the old Brown Elementary site. The maps split the southern portion of the county into halves: Phase 1, which…

District officials are putting the finishing touches on three redistricting plans created over the summer.

Ultimately, the redistricting plan will affect 27 elementary schools and will most likely include school closings. Doug Shepard, chief SPLOST administrative officer for the Cobb County School District, said the maps are undergoing “last-minute refinements,” and will be likely be unveiled within the next two weeks. Over the summer, various people–including school board members David …

SPSU’s recently launched International Knowledge Resource Center for Green Building partnered with Cobb County School District to defray the cost of LEED certification for the new Smyrna elementary school. Doug Shepherd, Cobb County School’s chief administrator for SPLOST projects, said that the school was originally going to be built to green standards, but not officially certified through the U.S. Green Building Council because of cost. “I’m really pleased that we can partner with Southern Poly and really …
