The Week Ahead in Smyrna-Vinings

See what's coming up in the week ahead in Smyrna-Vinings including a school board meeting and a festival.

Halpern Enterprises will present their request for rezoning Belmont Hills at Monday’s Smyrna Planning and Zoning Board meeting. The development is still zoned for mixed use, but because the developer’s original plan was site-specific any changes made must be approved by the Planning and Zoning Board. “We requested to change the layout of some of the stuff that’s on our previous zoning plans,” said Steve West, Halpern’s vice president of development. “That requires going back through the zoning process again so we’ve submitted to do that. On top of that there’s market studies and site studies that have to be looked and reviewed before we can move forward with anything.” Halpern is proposing moving the site’s multifamily component to the …

Mayor Explains Decision to Cancel Smyrna Birthday

The fireworks show has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15.

Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon shed some light on why the city decided to cancel its 140th Birthday Celebration at Monday’s Smyrna City Council meeting. The event was scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4, but city officials made the decision to cancel the event earlier that same day because of the threat of thunderstorms. “We’re sorry we had to do that, but we had a very short window to make a decision based on the fireworks,” Bacon said. “I want to say that if we had not canceled it, it would have cost $30,000 to cancel things later so we didn’t spend that much money to cancel. So that’s great.” Smyrna's City Administrator Eric Taylor explained further after the meeting. "There are a lot of costs that figured in that can be foregone," he said. "If we …

I watched the weather for most of the day and knew it didn't look good for the event to get off the ground, so I improvised and invited my friends that had planned on going to come over to my house for a "Olympic 2012" party. We had food, beverages, conversation and the opportunity to cheer on OUR USA athlete's in their quest for the gold. And now we have another excuse to get together on …   more ›

Local Short Fiction

'Welcome to Smyrnings' - Something Tasty

It's a visit to the Taste of Smyrna in this 18th installment of our Smyrna-Vinings Patch fiction series.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning in Smyrna. Ronnie pointed. "That's where I first met Wishes." Cherie looked. "What, the big bouncy thing with the slides?" "No, behind it. This way." She led Cherie around the giant inflated bouncy, slidy thing for kids, to the fountain on the plaza in front of the Smyrna Public Library. A few children were sitting on the edge, dabbing their hands in the clear water. "No joke, Cherie, he was checking to see if his Sea Monkeys were growing in there." Cherie's forehead wrinkled for a moment, the way Ronnie loved. "Monkeys don't live in the sea, Doll. Don't tell me you're a champion of the Aquatic Ape Hypothesis!" "I think the Sea Monkeys are really something called brine shrimp. They sell them in kits." "…
