Will donating to charity ever be as popular as shopping during the holiday season? A partnership of nonprofits hopes so. The Giving Tuesday website says the effort, coming on the heels of days devoted to consumerism, is designed "to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations." Several …

Georgia State Patrol troopers will be out in full force this Thanksgiving holiday travel period, on the look out for impaired drivers and other violations in an attempt to reduce the number of traffic accidents. “We know from past experience that speed, alcohol, and failing to use seat belts are the primary contributing factors in fatal crashes,” said Colonel Mark W. McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, in a released statement. “By conducting concentrated patrols or holding roadchecks across the state, troopers, deputies and officers can intercept violators before they are involved in a serious traffic crash.” The holiday period begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21 and ends at midnight Sunday, Nov. 25. What my kids have taught me about gratitude.
It's that time of year again where I reflect on all the things that I am grateful for. Being a parent has helped me to not take things for granted and to appreciate many simple moments in life. Here is a list of the top 10 things that I've learned to be thankful for since I became a mother. 1. The value of a good night's sleep. Seriously, I had never known true exhaustion until I became a parent. Now that my children sleep soundly through the night, I thank my lucky stars for 8 hours of uninterrupted bliss. Without it, I turn into a crazy person. 2. A closed bathroom door. It's rare that I spend time powdering my nose without a child following me in there. Oh, but those moments that I do escape are so beautiful, even if both of my children…

Pumpkins are here and ready to enjoy. They are fun to decorate with during the autumn months but they’re also good to eat. You can use fresh cooking pumpkins, bake them and scoop out the pulp or, like I do, take the easy way out and use canned pumpkins for my baking needs. Here are some new pumpkin ideas for this year. The next time you bake a pumpkin pie try using a gingersnap crust for it instead of the traditional flour crust. If you have an ice cream maker, enjoy some pumpkin ice cream. Two of my favorite ways to serve pumpkin are a pumpkin dip that is served with gingersnaps and in pumpkin bread. Pumpkin bread is easy to make, delicious, freezes well and makes a nice gift. What more can you ask? Below are the recipes for my two …
