‘Stamp Out Hunger’ by Leaving Food at Your Mailbox

Local USPS letter carriers in Smyrna-Vinings will join the nation's largest single-day food drive led by NALC this weekend.

Letter carriers with the U.S. Postal Service in the Smyrna-Vinings area will help collect food this Saturday, May 11 to help "Stamp Out Hunger." The annual effort led by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is in its 21st year, and is the largest single-day food drive in the nation across 10,000 cities. Since the food drive started in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than 1 billion pounds of food. Last year, more than 73 million pounds of food were collected nationally, and more than 200,000 pounds were collected in metro Atlanta, said Michael Miles, USPS spokesman in Atlanta. U.S. Postal Service to Drop Saturday Mail in August

The move will save about $2 billion and will not affect package delivery, according to various news outlets.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Wednesday the end of Saturday mail delivery. "What's being reported is one of those things that we are looking at as another possible cost-cutting measure," said Michael Miles, spokesperson for the Atlanta District of the USPS. "So for now it's part of a study that we are looking at over the next five years to reduce our costs." Saturday mail delivery will end in August. The move, which does not affect package delivery, is expected to save $2 billion annually, the report indicated. On Tuesday, The Huffington Post reported that Hallmark Cards, Inc. has hired lobbyists who will ask Congress to keep Saturday delivery and consider other cost-saving measures.
