Holiday Comes Early for Local Veteran

A local veteran and his family were surprised Monday at the Sears store at Cumberland Mall.

By Anna Tzinares For many military families, the holidays can be stressful rather than joyful. Sergeant First Class Charles Coleman is a soldier from the Atlanta area who finds himself in a difficult position: preparing for another deployment while coping with the challenges of his daughter recently being placed on the bone marrow transplant list. To make the holiday season easier for his family in particular, Sears Heroes at Home surprised the Coleman family with gifts from Sears, including a computer and a gift card to purchase items for their home. Over the past five years, the Sears Heroes at Home Wish Registry has raised $17 million through customer donations and has helped over 83,000 military families during the holidays.

Speak Out: Should Veterans Day Be a School Holiday?

Public schools will be one of the few government services in operation today. Tell us what you think about that.

Banks are closed today. So are post offices. But schools will still be in session. Today is also a holiday for the state of Georgia, one of the 12 holidays state employees will observe this year. While most other government-related offices will be closed for the day, students this morning will be heading to classes in the Cobb, Douglas, and Paulding county school systems. Should schools be closed for Veterans Day? Tell us in the poll below. We want to hear from you. Let us know …

While I have to admit that I have not attended the American Legion ceremony previously, I felt that the event was inspirational to all that were present. Just listening to the accomplishments of Joseph “Doc” Masterson Sr. should inspire everyone. Great job.   more ›
