While the 2011 high school football regular season is winding down, a former Whitefield Academy signal caller's college career is ramping up with Saturday start at Notre Dame.
Will Muschamp serves as head coach for the first time in a Georgia-Florida game on Saturday, but brother Mike has his own important rivalry showdown to coach in this weekend. That game comes tonight as Lovett travels the short two miles down West Paces Ferry Road to face rival Westminster. The winner of the 7:30 p.m. game will likely have a far easier time getting past next week’s play-in game opponent to reach the Class AA state playoffs. Lovett, 6-2 overall and 3-1 6-AA Division B, has made the state playoffs in each of Muschamp’s six seasons at the school. Westminster, 4-4 and 3-1, routed the Lions 37-14 last year to stake claim to the division’s automatic state berth. The Lions, who are on a 14-2 run off a loss following last week’s 32…

The Wolfpack and the Lovett Lions rolled to wins Friday night while Campbell stumbled at home.
Behind the strong running of Richard Sherrell and Khalen Pinkett, Whitefield Academy snapped a three-game losing skid with a 27-10 win at Strong Rock Christian this past Friday night. The victory improved the Wolfpack to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in region action as they return home this coming Friday to face Our Lady of Mercy. Sherrell ran for 117 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries, while Pinkett added 50 yards and two scores on five carries. Quarterback Max Kemether was 6 of 13 passing for 63 yards with his top two targets being Jay Fields (3 catches for 35 yards) and John Alar (2 for 26 yards). Thomas East reached the 100-point plateau in his Whitefield career by booting a pair of 33-yard field goals for the Pack, who eclipsed last year’s …

Whitefield Academy also back in action this high school football Friday night, which will see Lovett honoring one of its coaching greats with a field dedication.
It’s Friday night and that means high school football where Campbell celebrates Senior Night, Lovett seeks a homecoming win and Whitefield Academy returns after an off week. The Campbell Spartans, 1-6 overall and 1-3 in Region 4-AAAAA action, play their fifth and final home game of the season as South Cobb, 5-2 and 2-2, comes to Smyrna for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Campbell has dropped eight straight and 13 of its last 14 at home and first-year coach Harris Rainbow would like nothing more than to close out the 2011 home slate with a win over the Spartans' region rival. “South Cobb is an explosive football team,’’ Rainbow said. “Hopefully our guys will come out and play hard, have fun and let the cards fall where they lay.’’ A total of 22 …

High school sports roundup includes news of a former Lovett football star being named Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
Campbell High basketball player Justin Seymour has committed to play his college hoops at the University of Utah. The 6-foot-4 senior guard announced his decision via Twitter on Monday morning. "I've made the decision to continue my educational interest & basketball at The University of Utah of the PAC 12," Seymour wrote. Seymour averaged 20.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.28 assists last season for coach James Gwyn. He also had offers from Boston University, College of Charleston, San Diego State, La Salle, Houston and Central Florida. _______ On the football front, congratulations to the Campbell Spartans and first-year coach Harris Rainbow on their first victory of the season. Campbell scored a 33-7 win at Kennesaw Mountain on Friday night…

Lions host Therrell while Campbell and Whitefield hit the road to try to end losing skids in local high school football action.
Something’s got to give tonight in Kennesaw where winless Campbell travels to take on winless Kennesaw Mountain in a Region 4-AAAAA contest. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. between the Spartans (0-5 overall, 0-2 in the region) and the Mustangs (0-5, 0-2). After last week’s 43-14 homecoming loss to North Cobb, Campbell has now dropped 13 straight overall and 21 of its last 23 games. Kennesaw Mountain has lost nine straight and 14 of its last 15. The lone Mustang victory in that stretch came in a 25-3 win at Campbell last year. The Spartans are off a brutal three-game stretch in which they were outscored by North Cobb, McEachern and Walton by a 147-21 combined score. On the season, Campbell is giving up an average of 41.4 points per game. But …

CHS homecoming parade set for 5:30 p.m. in downtown Smyrna. Tonight, Campbell looks to win for first time in more than a year as the North Cobb Warriors come to town for a region contest.
It’s homecoming tonight at Campbell High where the Spartans will attempt to end a 12-game losing streak dating back to last season. Campbell, 0-4 overall and 0-1 in Region 4-AAAAA play, was off last week. The Spartans will entertain North Cobb, 2-2 and 1-1, which also had an open date last Friday. The two teams have played a common opponent in Centennial as Campbell fell 26-22 to Knights in the season opener and North Cobb scored a 21-17 win at Centennial in Week 2. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Prior to the game their will be a homecoming parade through downtown Smyrna beginning at 5:30 p.m. No word on if Smyrna native Julia Roberts will be attending the homecoming festivities, but former Spartan head coach T.K. Lions fall at Buford while the Wolfpack are shutout in the second half in loss at Landmark Christian.
Lovett gave mighty Buford all it could handle for one half Friday night, but couldn’t withstand the Wolves’ punishing running game as Buford pulled away for a 35-7 win. The loss at Buford’s Tom Riden Stadium was the first of the year for the Lions, who dropped to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in Region 6-AA play. Top-ranked Buford (6-0) is the four-time defending state champion and has gone 27-1 since Lovett defeated the Wolves 28-21 two seasons ago. For a time Friday it looked as if the Lions could pull another shocker as they trailed Buford, which came into the game averaging 45 points per game, just 7-0 at the half. But behind the running of Andre Johnson (178 yards, two TDs) and Darrian Smith (84 yards, one score), the Wolves pulled away in the …

Undefeated Lions' game at Buford to be webcast; Whitefield on the road in region action while the Campbell Spartans are off tonight.
No. 4 Lovett travels to No. 1 Buford Friday night to battle the state's dominant team in a key 6-AA matchup. The Lions' upset bid will be broadcast online on the GPB Sports Webcast. The game begins at 7:30 p.m., and the webcast will be acommpanied by a web chat so those watching can comment on the game. Lovett is 3-0 on the season after a season-opening win at Thomasville, a home victory against Towers, and a win against Callaway in LaGrange. A bit of history is on Lovett's side: The Lions are the last team to defeat the Wolves, beating the eventual 2009 State Champions 28-21 at home. That 2009 game also resulted in the most points scored against Buford in a single game over the past seven seasons. This year, the Wolves are 5-0, having …

The Wolfpack began region play with shutout win over Southwest Atlanta Christian on Friday night.
On a beautiful homecoming night Friday, the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack evened their season record at 2-2 with a 22-0 blanking of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, 0-3. The Pack, now 1-0 in Region 5A play, were dominant defensively in limiting the Warriors to no yards passing and just 75 yards of total offense. Sophomore Lorenzo Carter led Whitefield with 6 tackles, 2 assists and 1½ sacks. Senior Ryan Jones and junior Max Rieves each added 4½ solo stops and 3 assists. The Wolfpack opened the scoring with a first quarter 2-yard run by Jones. Quarterback Max Kemether added the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. In the second quarter, Kemether connected on a 5-yard scoring pass to John Alar. Thomas East booted the extra point for a 15-0 …

City businesses and citizens help purchase helmets for Campbell football team.
It will no doubt be a tough challenge for the Campbell High Spartans Friday night when they travel to Powder Springs to take on the state’s top-ranked AAAAA team in McEachern. But regardless of the outcome, the Spartans will at least be properly outfitted thanks in part to a collection of Smyrna businesses and private citizens. Over the course of the previous couple of seasons, a plethora of losses on the field and suspensions off it had left the Campbell program in shambles. When the 2010 season concluded with eight straight losses, just 55 players in 9th through 12th grades were in the program. But the school brought in enthusiastic coach Harris Rainbow to revive Campbell football and CHS student-athletes responded. Here in the fourth …
