Smyrna area schools will be closed all week for spring break. Students in the Cobb County School District don't return to school until Monday, April 15. If you're looking for activities for the kids, the Cobb County Public Library System has activities planned all week. I have it on good authority that the county plans to close Lewis A. Ray Library in Oakdale (on Oakdale Road near Atlanta Road). The county reduced the hours to Monday-Thursday, closing at 6 and closed entirely on Friday and Saturday because of the economic downturn. Obviously, readership is down because of this drastic change. Predictably, because of reduced use, the county is using this reduction to justify closing our library. I have tried in the past to discuss this issue with our district commissioner and library officials, but the answer was "Send an email." The county is in strong financial standing, Chairman Tim Lee said.
In a time when Cobb County Commission Chairman Tim Lee said governments are close to filing for bankruptcy, Cobb County is thriving. The county, which recieved on unqualified or clean opinion on its Comprehensive Annual Plan audit, has the lowest millage rate in the metro Atlanta area, added 3 percent to the general fund reserve and 5 percent to its fire district fund reserve. And, in most areas, the county's revenues for fiscal year 2012 not only exceeded expenditures but also exceeded what county officials originally had budgeted. For example, in the General Fund, revenues came in at $327.5 million, up from the $325.8 million originally budgeted. The Friends of Cobb Public Library System's semi-annual book sale is being held Friday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct. 14 in Exhibit Halls A and B of Jim Miller Park at 2245 Callaway Road in Marietta. The sale runs 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. Items for sale include soft cover and hard back books, magazines, text books, DVD and VHS movies and children's books. Prices will range from 10 cents to $5. Only cash and check will be accepted at the sale. Last year, the book sales generated more than $80,000, which enabled the library staff to purchase new materials, including books and DVDs. This year, the group hopes to raise more than $100,000, which will be used to purchase additional materials including e-books.
