TSPLOST Changes Proposed

Cobb commission chairman Tim Lee wants to redirect some money for a Cumberland light rail station for East Cobb road projects; overhaul the Windy Hill Road interchange with Interstate 75.

With the deadline for the final project list looming for next summer's Atlanta regional transportation SPLOST, Cobb commission chairman Tim Lee is trying to make the referendum more palatable to county voters. Especially voters in prickly East Cobb.  The Marietta Daily Journal is reporting that at Wednesday's Atlanta Regional Roundtable meeting, Lee offered an amendment that would cut $300 million in funding for a proposed light rail station in the Cumberland Mall area and use some of it for Roswell Road widening and improvements in East Cobb.  Other redirected funds would overhaul the Windy Hill Road interchange with Interstate 75 and create a bus route from Acworth to Midtown Atlanta.  David Pendered of The Saporta Report wrote late …

It is embarrassing at our lack of Marta rail in metro Atlanta compared to other major metro areas in the U.S. and even worse when you compare it to other cities worldwide. The money needs to be spent now, yes, it will cost a lot but it will cost even more the longer we wait. If Cobb County would have opted in to Marta in the beginning, we wouldn't have these issues now and it looks like their …   more ›

Tim Lee: 'We need alternative transportation to be competitive'

Cobb commission chairman makes his transportation pitch at a Smyrna Rotary Club meeting.

Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee has hitched his caboose to light rail calling it “a good idea” for Cobb county's future. At a meeting of the Smyrna Rotary Club on Tuesday, Lee outlined his support for the 12.8-mile, $857 million light rail project that would connect the Cumberland-Galleria area to MARTA’s Arts Center Station in Midtown. The proposed light rail line made it onto the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable executive committee’s master list of transportation projects last month. The list will be finalized by an executive committee vote on Oct. 15. Lee explained that connecting the Cumberland-Galleria area to Midtown opens transportation gateways for what he considers to be the future of Cobb County: the US Highway 41 and …

Video: East Cobbers Sound Off on TSPLOST

Many residents attending a Tuesday town-hall meeting were skeptical that the regional sales tax would benefit them. Smyrna transportation town-hall meeting set for Thursday.

A strong majority of East Cobb residents attending a town-hall meeting Tuesday about next year's Atlanta regional transportation SPLOST referendum said they oppose the penny sales tax.  Many told state lawmakers at the Walton High School hearing, moderated by state Sen. Judson Hill (R-East Cobb), that they doubt the nearly $1.2 billion collected for Cobb projects over 10 years would benefit them. On Thursday night at Smyrna’s Brawner Hall at Taylor-Brawner Park, there will be another open forum to discuss the various initiatives and projects within the proposed transportation project list. The forum, which will be hosted by Sen. Doug Stoner (D-Smyrna) and Representatives Stacey Evans (D-Smyrna) and David Wilkerson (D-Austell), will be from…

While I was not at the East Cobb meeting, the general issue that residents had at that meeting and others like it is that they don't believe it will solve the current traffic congestion issue. That and being taxed in a recession. You might want to contact the writer, East Cobb Patch Editor Wendy Parker (wendy.parker@patch.com), and/or take a look at The Marietta Daily Journal's coverage from that…   more ›
