Barr has announced his candidacy to run for the U.S. House of Representatives to represent District 11 Seat, which includes parts of Smyrna-Vinings.
Former U.S. Rep Bob Barr wants to return to Congress. Barr, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives between 1995 and 2003, has announced his plans to run for the District 11 seat, which will be vacated by U.S. Rep Phil Gingrey as he plans to run for the U.S. Senate. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Barr was the author of the Defense of Marriage Act, whose constitutionality was debated earlier this week in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. He also ran for the presidency in 2008 on the Libertarian Party ticket and currently practices law in Atlanta.

U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey, of Marietta, says he is running for the open Senate seat, created by Saxby Chambliss's upcoming retirement.
Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Marietta) announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate Wednesday in Augusta. Gingrey is the second Republican congressman from Georgia to enter the race for the open seat created by Sen. Saxby Chambliss's upcoming retirement. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Watkinsville, announced his bid last month. Reps. Tom Price of Roswell and Jack Kingston of Savannah, as well as Democratic Rep. John Barrow, are also considering bids for the seat, which Chambliss will vacate after next year, The National Journal and SeattlePi.com report. In his remarks, Gingrey promised to trim the federal debt, repeal President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, fight a citizenship path for illegal immigrants and continue his opposition to abortion rights, …

U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Marietta, touched on the hot-button issue during an address to the Smyrna Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Tell us what you think of Gingrey’s comments.
The phrase “legitimate rape,” uttered by the now former U.S. Rep. Todd Akin last August in the midst of his re-election campaign, is one he and Republicans likely hoped most Republicans would forget last year. Akin’s comments suggesting that victims of "legitimate rape" have a built-in defense against pregnancy likely played a factor in the Missouri Republican's political defeat in November. While Akin’s comments became part of the political landscape in 2012, they have resurfaced in the early days of 2013, but this time in Georgia. U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Marietta, said as he spoke to the Smyrna Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce that the former representative was “partly right.” Here’s what Gingrey, an OB-GYN, said during his…

"It did not address spending, entitlement or tax reform in any meaningful way," he said on his Facebook page Wednesday afternoon.
Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Marietta), voted against the fiscal cliff deal that Congress approved late Tuesday. "I opposed the Senate amendment regarding the fiscal cliff because it did not address spending, entitlement or tax reform in any meaningful way," he said on his Facebook page Wednesday afternoon. "Furthermore, it continues Washington's habit of kicking the can down the road, fails to provide certainty for job creators or protection for small businesses." The U.S. House of Representatives voted 257 to 167 to send the measure to President Obama's desk for his signature. Had a deal not been reached, broad tax increases would have taken effect this month and there would have have been $110 billion in automatic cuts to domestic and military …

Georgia is attempting to pre-empt the Justice Department approval of the congressional and legislative redistricting plans by taking the maps to court in Washington.
Georgia has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, seeking federal approval of the newly drawn state legislative and congressional redistricting plans. Under the federal Voting Rights Act, Georgia must receive approval from the Justice Department or the D.C.-based federal court before any changes in election law are put into effect. This is the first redistricting process since Republicans took control of the state government. However, this is not the first time the state has chosen to go first to court, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Ten years ago, Democrats tried the same tactic to get around a Republican Justice Department. The courts tossed out much of the Democrat's plan. If the maps are …

By 1st Lt. Michael Thompson Rep. Phil Gingrey visited the Georgia Army National Guard’s 4th Civil Support Team for a briefing on the unit’s capabilities Aug. 31. The 4th CST provides chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and low-yield-explosive expertise to local, state and federal agencies in emergencies. “To see this unit’s capabilities is extremely impressive,” said Gingrey (R-Marietta), who represents the 11th District including a portion of Smyrna. He visited the 4th CST at Dobbins Air Reserve Base during Congress’ August recess. The visit to the base came between town-hall meetings in Cartersville on Aug. 29 and Kennesaw on Sept. 1. “This unit, as part of the Georgia Army National Guard, is a signature unit that was made up …

It will take at least a few days for the new districts to work their way through the Georgia Legislature.
Vinings would be included in a congressional district with Cherokee and Bartow counties under a draft map released Monday. The proposed change would put the community into the 11th Congressional District now represented by Republican Rep. Phil Gingrey. The 11th already includes part of Smyrna and the newly drawn lines would pick up Vinings and then dogleg into Buckhead to include the northern neighborhoods of that Atlanta community. Today, Republican Rep. Tom Price represents Vinings as part of the 6th District. Bill Voegeli, president of the Vinings Homeowners Association, said it was too early to assess what a change in district would mean for Vinings. Part of that is because most of the governmental issues that Vinings deals with is …
Vinings redrawn in a new congressional district; Cobb County commissioners to get first look at the 2012 budget.
Vinings would be included in a congressional district with Cherokee and Bartow counties under a draft map released Monday. Today, Republican Rep. Tom Price represents Vinings as part of the 6th District. But the proposed change would put the community into the 11th Congressional District, which now includes parts of Smyrna and is represented by Republican Rep. Phil Gingrey. The newly drawn lines would then dogleg into Buckhead to include the northern neighborhoods of that Atlanta community. Smyrna-Vinings Patch will have more on the proposed changes later Tuesday. Also Tuesday, the Cobb County commissioners will get a first look at the 2012 budget during a work session this afternoon. Chairman Tim Lee said Friday that the county's 2012 …

Sen. Johnny Isakson votes yes, while Sen. Saxby Chambliss votes no.
Without the mandate of a balanced budget amendment, U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey said he could not go along with a federal debt ceiling agreement that passed the House of Representatives Monday night. On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate also passed the plan 74-26, with Georgia Republican Senator Johnny Isakson voting with the majority. Saxby Chambliss was one of 11 GOP senators to vote no. The agreement barely beats a deadline under which the U.S. government would have defaulted for the first time in history, but members of Congress on both sides of the vote, from both parties and both chambers all agreed it is far from ideal. Republican Congressman Tom Price of Roswell, whose district includes most of East Cobb including Vinings, as well as …
