Barr has announced his candidacy to run for the U.S. House of Representatives to represent District 11 Seat, which includes parts of Smyrna-Vinings.
Former U.S. Rep Bob Barr wants to return to Congress. Barr, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives between 1995 and 2003, has announced his plans to run for the District 11 seat, which will be vacated by U.S. Rep Phil Gingrey as he plans to run for the U.S. Senate. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Barr was the author of the Defense of Marriage Act, whose constitutionality was debated earlier this week in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. He also ran for the presidency in 2008 on the Libertarian Party ticket and currently practices law in Atlanta.

Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Marietta) announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate Wednesday in Augusta. Gingrey is the second Republican congressman from Georgia to enter the race for the open seat created by Sen. Saxby Chambliss's upcoming retirement. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Watkinsville, announced his bid last month. Reps. Tom Price of Roswell and Jack Kingston of Savannah, as well as Democratic Rep. John Barrow, are also considering bids for the seat, which Chambliss will vacate after next year, The National Journal and SeattlePi.com report. Georgia is attempting to pre-empt the Justice Department approval of the congressional and legislative redistricting plans by taking the maps to court in Washington.
Georgia has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, seeking federal approval of the newly drawn state legislative and congressional redistricting plans. Under the federal Voting Rights Act, Georgia must receive approval from the Justice Department or the D.C.-based federal court before any changes in election law are put into effect. This is the first redistricting process since Republicans took control of the state government. However, this is not the first time the state has chosen to go first to court, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The 4th CST provides chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and low-yield-explosive expertise to local, state and federal agencies in emergencies. “To see this unit’s capabilities is extremely impressive,” said Gingrey (R-Marietta), who represents the 11th District including a portion of Smyrna. He visited the 4th CST at Dobbins Air Reserve Base during Congress’ August recess. Without the mandate of a balanced budget amendment, U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey said he could not go along with a federal debt ceiling agreement that passed the House of Representatives Monday night. On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate also passed the plan 74-26, with Georgia Republican Senator Johnny Isakson voting with the majority. Saxby Chambliss was one of 11 GOP senators to vote no.
