Quarantine, Hoarding and Happy Thanksgiving

Even with most cats quarantined at the shelter, there isn't a shortage of available cats or dogs for adoption. Plus vet tips on the Feline Panleukopenia virus.

Silly me thought this would be a week of rest and relaxation…what was I thinking? The cats in both cat rooms at Cobb County Animal Control (CCAC) shelter are under quarantine after three cases of Panleukopenia surfaced (Panleuk for short - a.k.a Distemper). All incoming cats get vaccinated against this virus when they enter the shelter. However, the very young kittens cannot be vaccinated due to their age. They are, therefore, most susceptible to the Panleuk virus. The training room at the shelter has been set up as a temporary cat room so that the incoming cats, which aren’t under the quarantine, have the opportunity to be adopted. On top of all this, a bizarre case of too much of a trying-to-do-a-good thing, has lead to 100 cats needing …

Thanksgiving - Purrfect Time to Add a New Family Member

What's one more place at the dinner table...or under it? Adopt a Pilgrim cat, they would be oh so thankful! Plus, vet tips on pet obesity.

Many changes are happening and many more are needed at the Cobb County Animal Control shelter, but for this week I decided to concentrate on the holiday season soon to begin. Thanksgiving, a day for giving thanks and for celebration, is the perfect time to add a new family member. Perhaps one of these Pilgrim kitties would be welcome in your home this Thanksgiving Day…and everyday after that.  If you would like to help make these animals stay at the shelter a bit more comfy, you can order a kitty bed for a donation of $15. These beds are made locally and with much love for the animals. For a dog bed, donate a Kuranda bed. They can be purchased and donated to the shelter by ordering online. The beds will be sent directly to the shelter www.…

It's a Dog's (and Cat's) Life When Confined in a Shelter

Life in a shelter leaves much to be desired...a warm bed, a loving companion, and room to move. Visiting the shelter makes a difference. Plus, tips on how to tame a barking dog.

The HVAC contractors have arrived at the Cobb County Animal Control shelter and begun the installation to provide air conditioning to the dog kennel areas. The poor dogs suffered during the summer heat, as did anyone that went out there to visit them. Life in an animal control shelter is rough. The dogs are confined, although they can move around a bit…how much depends on the pen and the size of the dog. Those that are housetrained try to hold their wee until someone comes to take them out; otherwise they “mess” up their cage. These dogs have it particularly tough because they are trying to be good. The cats are also confined, albeit to a much smaller area. The larger cats can barely turn around and all are forced to eat and sleep next to …

ASPCA challenge numbers in for Cobb Animal Control

Another option for shelter animals is to be rescued by a licensed rescue group. Plus, vet tips on cognitive dysfunction or senility in your dog.

The numbers are in for the first six weeks of the ASPCA challenge and Cobb County Animal Control is in 45th place out of fifty. The number adopted out this year over last year for that time…minus-151 - yes, negative one fifty one. But, thankfully, the ASPCA website only shows a 0 – that’s a zero – zero more adopted out. How, you ask, can this count be correct when the two special adoption Saturdays yielded 62 adoptions at the first event and 60 adoptions at the last event day? What it means is that last year 151 more animals had been adopted out during this same time period. Imagine what the numbers would be if the shelter had not held those two special adoption days. On Monday of this past week, I have been told, that 87 animals lost …

Pets of the Week

Four Boots, Socks, and little Big Man Need Homes

Our Pets of the Week are all adorable; plus vet tips on how to recognize food allergies in your pets.

One month into the ASPCA grant challenge but no word yet from Cobb County Animal Control (CCAC) shelter on how the numbers are looking.  The shelter won a chance to compete against 49 other U.S. shelters for part of the $300,000 grant money being offered by the ASPCA. The top prize is $100,000 with the remaining $200,000 divided up into $5,000 and $25,000 grants.   The challengers must adopt out a minimum of 300 more animals over the three-month challenge period (Aug. 1 – Oct. 31) than were adopted out the year before during that same three-month period. The ASPCA purpose for this challenge is to get communities involved in their local shelters, and with more community involvement, adoptions will increase and more lives will be saved.  …

Two Special Pets, Two New Programs

Our Pets of the Week, Butch and Molly, need homes. Plus, check out our weekly helpful vet tips.

“Death is a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” Cpt. Jeff Patellis, Director of Cobb County Animal Control (CCAC), said this week. “I’ve asked my staff to ‘think outside the box’ and come up with innovative ways to house the overflow of animals (cutting down on the need to euthanize for space) and get more animals adopted." Housing the 200-plus cats on the back dock in penthouse cages (soon to be surrounded by plexi-glass sheeting to keep upper respiratory infections down) is one of these innovative solutions. Cobb Company Cats is another. This program, now in place, allows Cobb businesses to adopt an adult cat to be their company cat. Cats relax the atmosphere, lower blood pressure, and make clients feel welcomed when they come …

Pets of the Week: Lexie and Russell Need a Home

Two wonderful animals are featured, plus tips on how to retrain your dog if it shows aggression around food.

Animals offer us unconditional love, complete loyalty, and many hours of entertainment. They give us a reason for getting up when life has thrown us a curve and offer complete support when we seek out new challenges. It’s scientifically proven that the shared bond between us has substantial health benefits for both sides. There are plenty of animals at the Cobb County Animal Control shelter ready to step up and offer companionship, with at least one for every person interested. Why not make the move and begin a new relationship today?   It’s hard to have favorites when there are so many wonder animals to choose from, but these two, Lexie and Russell, stand out among the rest in the eyes of two workers at the shelter – one staff, one …

Pets of the Week: Cats and Dogs of Every Size and Sort Need Homes

There is an abundance of wonderful animals at the shelter waiting to find loving homes; plus vet tips on nail trimming.

Thank you Jesus…it was quiet at the Cobb County Animal Control shelter this week - well relatively speaking. The cats all greeted me with varying degrees of cat talk; most of them had soft pillows and all had plenty of food.   There were also more old timers there than I had expected. On Monday, when I went to the committee meeting at the shelter, there were more than 200 cats/kittens alone. I never heard what the count was for the dogs that day. It is mind boggling the sheer number of animals that are turned in daily, and so many by their owners. The poor dogs languish in the heat of the day out in their kennels. Many animals are running out of time…if you have room for one dog or cat in your heart and home, please, come to the shelter …
