Update: Cobb Police ID Officer Shot in Smyrna

The officer is in good condition.

Update: 4:29 p.m.

Cobb police still have not captured the gunman who shot an officer this morning in Smyrna.

"We have exhausted all of our leads in that area," Officer Mike Bowman told Patch this afternoon. "We're still following up on leads, but as of right now we've closed down our staging area and all units are in service."

About 1:15 a.m. today, Officer D. Rogers was on patrol at the Concord Chase Apartments on Hurt Road when he came across a suspicious man who led the officer on a foot chase, Bowman said.

The man turned around at some point during the chase and shot Rogers in the chest, Bowman said. He was wearing a bulletproof vest. Rogers, who has been with the police department since 2005, is at home in good condition, Bowman said.

Police will continue to follow up on leads in the agency's search for a black man with a dark complexion and low-cut hair in twists. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and khaki pants.
