Smyrna Motorcycle Officer Struck On South Cobb Drive

The driver has been identified as 21-year-old Jennifer Karen Cook.


UPDATE: Officer Michael Smith, Smyrna Police Department's public information officer, said Corporal Gene Crawford was in good spirits, but a substantial amount of pain Tuesday night after being struck by a car while on patrol. He is scheduled for surgery Wednesday.

UPDATE: Smyrna police have identified Jennifer Karen Cook, 21, as the driver who struck and injured a motorcycle officer Monday afternoon.

Cook has been arrested and charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor: hit and run, serious injury by a vehicle and failure to yield to left turn. She is being detained at Smyrna City Jail and bond has been set at $25,000.

Corporal Gene Crawford sustained two broken ankles, a broken leg and a fractured hip in the accident.

UPDATE: The injured officer has been identified as Corporal Gene Crawford, a 29-year veteran of the Smyrna Police Department.Β

The driver who struck Crawford fled the scene, but has since been apprehended by Smyrna police. Officer Michael Smith said she faces charges of hitΒ and run, serious injury and failure to report an accident. He said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident at this time.

Original Story:Β A Smyrna motorycle police officer was struck Tuesday afternoon on South Cobb Drive, and may suffer two broken legs.

The officer has been taken to Kennestone Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Police have confirmed to Patch that the officer was struck near South Cobb Drive and Ridge Road by a female in a Toyota Camry. The driver fled the scene of the accident.
