“We’ve had this thing since February or March—really we didn’t close on it till about April, but it’s time to do something,” he said. “So we batted it around the Council for a few minutes and said, ‘Hey let’s put a sign out there for a couple months and if it sells somebody can come in and develop it.’ We don’t have any plans for it.”

Welch said the steel frame on the lot is structurally sound if a developer choses to build it out. If the property is not sold in the next few months, Welch said the city will continue with its plans to demolish the structure.

The decision to put the property back on the market has been criticized by at least one Smyrna resident. Alex Backry, a regular speaker during citizen input, took the podium to criticize the decision.

"Georgia is now number one from number four in foreclosures in the country—an awful stigma to have,” he said. “This is showing red flags that we should stay out of the real estate business and anyone who feels we should still be in it should resign and we’ll find other people to spend our money more wisely.”
