Police Make Arrest in Smyrna Cop Shooting

The 19-year-old man has been charged with shooting a Cobb police officer in Smyrna last summer.

A 19-year-old Smyrna man is being held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center after being arrested in connection with the shooting of a Cobb County Police officer in July.

According to a police information release, Shymel Young was arrested on Jan. 2 and is currently being held without bond. Young has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.

On July 12, 2013 at 1:15 a.m., Officer Danny Rogers was shot in the chest by a person now believed to be Young in the vicinity of the Concord Chase Apartments. Rogers was wearing a bulletproof vest and has since recovered from his injury.

There was a combined $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter; the National Police Defense Foundation posted a $10,000 reward, and Atlanta Crime Stoppers supplied the remaining $5,000.

Clear Channel also provided a billboard free of charge at the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Cranfill Road to get the word out about the suspect and the reward.
